This process converts the fish oil from a natural TGC form to a synthetic ethyl ester form, making it less tolerable with much less bioavailability making it challenging to reach therapeutic levels.
Most Omega-3 supplements on the market are in the ethyl ester form, which is less expensive to produce and more affordable for patients. However, this form is less bioavailable, making it difficult to achieve the therapeutic levels needed for clinical benefit.
So what PRN does, they take the time to take the ethyl ester and re-esterify it, putting it back into the natural TGC form which is a long, 8 week, more expensive process, but, you get a more pure, tolerable and more bioavailable product that guarantees you to get to therapeutic levels.
And that’s the difference between an ethyl ester Omega-3 (which is almost all the products you see in the store) and PRN’s re-esterified (rTGC) form of Omega-3. There’s only a handful of companies (including PRN) that takes this extra step to purify the product. Even the prescription versions of omega-3 fatty acids, such as Lovaza and Vascepa, are both manufactured in the ethyl Ester form.
To get the full benefits of Omega-3s, most people would need to take about 15 capsules a day in the ethyl ester form. In contrast, you’d only need about 3 capsules of the rTGC (PRN's DE-3) form to reach the same level—because let’s be honest, no one wants to take 15 pills a day.
If you can get to therapeutic levels, not only do we get the ocular benefits but according to the American Heart Association and the Framingham heart study, omega 3 index levels were found to be as useful of a risk factor of predicting total mortality and sudden cardiac death as lipid levels, blood pressure, smoking and diabetes status. It's very difficult to get therapeutic levels (Omega-3) in the ethyl ester form or with a supplement that has predominantly GLA or diet alone.
