Laser Cataract Surgery

vs. Traditional Cataract Surgery

Both laser-assisted cataract surgery and traditional cataract surgery effectively remove cloudy lenses and replace them with artificial intraocular lenses (IOLs), but they differ in technique, technology, and precision.

Traditional Cataract Surgery (Phacoemulsification)

  • A surgeon manually creates a small incision in the cornea.
  • A circular opening (capsulotomy) is made in the lens capsule to access the cataract.
  • An ultrasound probe breaks up the cloudy lens using phacoemulsification, and the fragments are removed.
  • An artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted to replace the natural lens.
  • The incision is usually self-sealing and does not require stitches.

Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery

  • A femtosecond laser replaces the manual blade to create corneal incisions.
  • The laser creates a more precise and centered capsulotomy, which may improve IOL positioning.
  • The laser softens the cataract, requiring less ultrasound energy to break up and remove the lens.
  • Advanced imaging (OCT-guided) helps customize the procedure for each patient.
  • Often used to correct mild astigmatism by making precise corneal incisions.

Insurance Coverage

  1. Traditional Cataract Surgery:
    • Typically covered by Medicare and private insurance as a medically necessary procedure.
    • Standard intraocular lenses (IOLs) are covered, but premium lenses (e.g., multifocal, toric) usually require out-of-pocket payment.
  2. Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery:
    • Generally NOT fully covered by Medicare or most private insurers because it is considered an elective option.
    • Patients usually pay out-of-pocket for the laser portion and any premium lens options.
