Demodex

Eye Mites

Demodex mites are tiny, worm-like parasites that live on the skin, including the skin around the eyes. There are two main species of Demodex mites that affect humans: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. Demodex folliculorum are typically found in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the skin, while Demodex brevis are typically found in the meibomian glands (glands that produce oil to keep the surface of the eye lubricated) and the sebaceous glands of the eyelids.

Demodex mites are usually harmless and do not cause any symptoms. However, in some people, infestations of Demodex mites can lead to a variety of problems, including dry eye, eye irritation, and inflammation of the eyelids. Demodex mites are more common in people with certain risk factors, such as advanced age, a history of eye surgery, and certain medical conditions, such as rosacea (a skin condition that affects the face).

Treatment for Demodex mites may involve the use of medications or topical ointments to kill the mites and reduce inflammation. In many cases, treatment may also include using eyelid hygiene products to clean the eyelids and remove debris.

Additional treatment procedures may be available. It is important to schedule an appointment with us if you have symptoms of an infestation of Demodex mites, as early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent complications and preserve vision.
